We made a visit to St Mary’s Church at Cofton, as part of our work on Belonging, in RE.

  Class 2 are finding out about rivers. For one week we are spending 15 minutes every morning observing the River Exe and estuary. We are recording the temperature, weather, tide times, sea state, wildlife and traffic. We are also noticing the difference in the tide over a few days.

   Last Friday (4th October), our class learnt about traditional Irish food and drink, thanks to a fantastic, interactive presentation by Imogen. She prepared a selection of tasty treats for the class to enjoy, including some Irish butter and cheeses, soda bread, potato farls and delicious home made barmbrack.

   No Irish topic would be complete without delving into Irish music and dance! At the start of the term, our class explored footage of lots of traditional Irish music and dance. Mrs Carter, a music specialist teacher who plays in a céilí band, came in to class 1 for an afternoon and did an…

  Again in keeping with our Irish theme, we explored a selection of Irish myths and legends earlier in the term. Each group was given a legend, which they re-wrote in their own words, created story boards for and then acted out for the rest of the class.

  In keeping with our habitat topic and with the proximity to Halloween, Bryony and Jeremy, parents of a child in class 3, paid a special visit to Class 1 on the 21st of October. Bryony, a wildlife consultant and bat conservationist, brought in some live bats to show our class.

   Our topic for the first term is, ‘Ireland’, where we are looking at various aspects of Irish culture and geography. Within art lessons we have been exploring Celtic design, particularly focusing on the Book of Kells, an illuminated manuscript containing beautiful ornate illustrations and intricate calligraphy.
