In keeping with our habitat topic and with the proximity to Halloween, Bryony and Jeremy, parents of a child in class 3, paid a special visit to Class 1 on the 21st of October. Bryony, a wildlife consultant and bat conservationist, brought in some live bats to show our class. She taught us a lot about the various indigenous species. We learned about their features, life
cycle, habitats and even heard some clips of bats using echolocation. Jeremy, a carpenter, then demonstrated how to create bat boxes. Class 1 worked hard in groups to create their own wooden boxes. Early next term, we will erect these boxes in the local woodland to provide safe habitats for local bats to hibernate for the winter. In early spring, Bryony will return to school to work with Class 1, helping us to monitor the bat population living in our boxes. She will show us how to record and measure their vital statistics. Many thanks to Bryony and Jeremy for the visit, we learned lots of fascinating facts and can’t wait to learn more from future visits.
