School Performance

OFSTED- October 2023
Cockwood School is a GOOD school, where ‘pupils flourish’.
They also said:
   Parents and carers agree that the school develops self-belief and a love of learning in their children. This supports pupils well for the next stage in their education.

   Pupils at Cockwood Primary School are confident and considerate. They are enthusiastic about their education and knowledgeable about the wider world around them. The school encourages this through the vast array of opportunities and experiences they provide. These include pupils taking on leadership roles, residential trips, sporting events and entrepreneurial projects. As a result, pupils learn to be responsible and respectful members of their communities

Ofsted Report | PDF

We are very proud of the main findings of our last Ofsted report in February 2018 which said that;

“The leadership team has maintained the good quality education in the school since the previous inspection.
Your dedicated leadership inspires trust and confidence in the school community and engenders enthusiastic staff teamwork. Leaders have developed highly productive relationships with other schools, including enlisting support to improve the effectiveness of subject leaders. Teachers have embraced this culture of continuous improvement and welcome coaching alongside their colleagues as a professional opportunity. Consequently, staff morale is high.

The school’s caring ethos ensures that pupils are very well looked after. Pupils benefit from an engaging curriculum which promotes the good development of reading, writing and mathematical skills across all subjects.

Teachers effectively deploy support staff and this has a positive impact on pupils’ progress. Teaching assistants have a good level of subject knowledge that ensures they provide pupils with appropriate support and encouragement. Teaching assistants work especially well with groups who have special educational needs (SEN) and/or disabilities to help them make faster progress. This is particularly noticeable in the teaching of mathematics.

In 2017 pupil’s progress in writing was particularly strong, being significantly above the national average. in 2017, achievement was strong in Key Stage 1, with the proportion of pupils reaching the expected standard higher than the national figure. There was a marked rise in the proportion of children who achieved a good level of development at the end of the Reception Year to well above the national figure. This demonstrates that current pupils have a secure platform upon which to develop further.

The senior leadership team and governors have high aspirations for all pupils. Leaders have made significant improvements to the teaching of writing. Pupils have regular opportunities to write for a purpose…

The leadership team has ensured that all safeguarding arrangements are fit for purpose and records are detailed and of a high quality. Staff are well trained. They confidently use the school’s robust procedures for reporting any concerns they may have. Governors are closely involved with this element of the school’s work because they are highly committed in their role.

Pupils say that they trust staff and know what to do to keep safe, including when working online. They enjoy school and have confidence in the staff that look after them.”

Our previous Ofsted Inspection in 2014 commented;

‘This is a good school with outstanding Leadership and management and outstanding Behaviour and safety of pupils. Attainment in mathematics, reading, speaking and listening is above average and for some pupils well above average, particularly in reading by the end of Year 6. Some pupils reach the highest levels in mathematics.

All children, including the more-able pupils, achieve well.

Pupils behaviour is outstanding. They love coming to school. Pupils feel very safe and the school has very good arrangements for ensuring that pupils are well cared for.

School leaders check the quality of teaching and learning very rigorously. Staff unreservedly support the school’s drive to maintain improvements and strive for excellence.

Parents and carers are very supportive of the school.
