Oracy Vision Statement

At Cockwood Primary School, we are committed to empowering our pupils to become confident, articulate, and respectful communicators who thrive and flourish. As an inclusive school, we embrace the diverse voices and unique talents of our school family, nurturing each child’s potential to soar.

Oracy is the golden thread that has been woven throughout our curriculum, and across our school, to empower our pupils to become tomorrow’s successful citizens, equipped with the skills and resilience to navigate the world with compassion and confidence.

What does it mean to be a Voice 21 School?

Becoming a Voice 21 Oracy School is a commitment: to transform oracy teaching and learning across our school, enabling all students to access and benefit from a high-quality oracy education.

Oracy is a set of teachable skills that are essential for life and when used skillfully, talk allows pupils to take ownership of their own learning, unlock and deepen their understanding, think critically and build confidence.

We are part of a thriving national network of over 600 schools, who are at the forefront of innovative and impactful oracy practice in the UK.

‘The ability to speak eloquently, articulate ideas and thoughts, influence through talking, collaborate with peers, and have the confidence to express your views are vital skills that support success in learning and life in general.’

Oracy increases confidence empowering students with the belief that their voice has value,
developing the ability to articulate thoughts so others will listen.

Oracy fosters wellbeing supporting students to build successful relationships, talk through
issues, express feelings and resolve conflicts.

Oracy equips students to thrive in life beyond school helping them to progress, access
employment and engage in civic life.

Oracy narrows gaps enabling disadvantaged students to fulfill their potential.

Oracy promotes social equity leading to a fairer society where everyone, regardless of
background, finds their voice for success in school and in life.
