Class 2 and class 3 spent a ‘wet” day following the Sculpture Trail around the grounds of the Streatham Campus of Exeter University. The rain didnt dampen our spirits and all the children enjoyed sketching and photogrpahing some of the fantastic sculptures on show. In particular they were particularly interested in the Barabar Hepworth sculpture representing a mother and child and the 1969 sculpture by Roger Leigh called ‘Partition’. The children liked the vivid yellow and green and geometric design of this sculpture and learnt that the yellow was for the corn fields that surround Exeter and the green underside represented the greenery within the university campus. Among the other sculptures the children liked was the ‘Stargazer’, a lady looking to the sky counting the stars and a new sculpture this year by Edward Crumpton called ‘Mariner’s Way’. The children were fascinated by the knots that were tied for every step that Edward took as he followed the Mariners Way and then 6000 metres of rope were wound around a cannon ball. Please have a look on the class pages to see more photos from our cultural day out.
