On 13th March 2008, we achieved the Devon Healthy Schools Award which is part of the National Healthy Schools Programme. The programme supports the links between health, behaviour and achievement; it is about creating healthy and happy children and young people, who do better in learning and in life.
To achieve healthy school status, we had to be successful in completing 62 separate criteria, which included a focus on healthy eating, physical activity, emotional health and well-being and reducing the misuse of drugs – including smoking and alcohol. The award also focuses on safety, child protection, careers, improving the environment, citizenship and safer travel to schools.
We had to demonstrate that the whole school community were involved in identifying and addressing the health needs of its community. We have also been particularly proud of the high quality of work we have achieved in writing our Travel Plan which was submitted in February 2008.
The School displays its Healthy School sign and logo, to show the whole school community – children/young people, staff, governors, parents, the local community and other professionals it works with, the official recognition it has received for these important aspects of school life.
The Healthy School status lasts for 3 years and each year we will receive a ‘Health Check’ visit as part of the on-going quality assurance procedures.
Devon Physical Activity Award (PEDPASS)
It is with great pleasure that I can inform you that Cockwood has received yet another award. We have been judged as ‘good’ for our physical education. The award is shown on our website and will now appear on our letterhead. Special thanks must be given to Miss McLarnon who has collated and compiled the evidence. Her hard work is truly appreciated.
