Last week our oldest pupils enjoyed a fabulous day out at the Farm Wise event held at Westpoint, Exeter. The event is designed to give children an interactive ‘out of classroom experience’ and to ‘touch, feel and smell’ farming and understand how it links with food production in the local environment within Devon.
Children visited a range of twelve activity zones including Dairy, Beef, Sheep, Wildlife, Poultry, Fruit, Vegetables, Arable, Forestry, Environment, Food and Pigs. Children got to see how eggs are checked before boxing, stroke cattle, examine owl pellets, make pumpkin juice, taste a range of milkshakes, watch bees producing honey, as well as lots of other exciting opportunities. Feedback from the children was overwhelmingly positive, many said they had a brilliant day and found it really interesting.
One child said, ” I learnt how cows get milked and tasted loads of different milkshakes”, another commented, ” I learnt how sausages are made and the different parts of a pig”. Yr 6 boy said, ” I enjoyed making and tasting the pumpkin juice.” A Year 5 girl mentioned, ” The owl pellets were fascinating, we got to look at them closely and could see what the barn owls had been eating.”
The children also enjoyed looking at the different farm machinery; there was definitely something for everyone.
