Cockwood School are celebrating achieving Fairtrade status.
Over the past eighteen months the school council has put all their efforts into learning more about Fairtrade and what the whole school can do to help Fairtrade farmers and their families.
They firstly created a Fairtrade Steering Committee and created a Fairtrade policy.
The council voted to make Oxfam their charity for the year as Oxfam helps families and has been involved in supporting Fairtrade for over 40 years.
Just some of the events Cockwood School Fairtrade Steering committee has been involved in includes; a blind tasting event, making a presentation to the local community including the Mayor of Dawlish, meeting Fairtrade producers, holding Fairtrade cake sales and attending a Fairtrade conference in Bristol.
Our most recent event was the grand opening of our Cockwood School Fairtrade Community Café. The event was our most successful yet and we managed to raise an incredible £125.90. The children worked very hard and had to wait tables, clear up and calculate their profit.
The School Fairtrade steering committee are hoping to invite a member of Oxfam to their next Fairtrade café, which will be opening its doors once a month. As it was so busy the café will be moving to the village hall to create more space for customers.
Our slideshow soundtrack is called ‘Halima Pakasholo,’ a beautiful welcoming call and response song from Namibia. The soundtrack is from Sing Up! All DLP Schools sign up to Sing UP, which transforms school life, improves learning and builds stronger communities.
