On Wednesday 26th February a group of 8 children from the School Council known as our ‘Fairtrade Steering Committee’ travelled up to Bristol to take part in a Fairtrade Conference. There were some very interesting speakers including Margarita Espinoza a coffee grower from Nicaragua, Kathy Wise from the Fairtrade Foundation, Kool Skools who produce Fairtrade cotton uniforms and work closely with the Fairtrade Cotton Industry.
There was a very special opportunity to have a ‘live’ link up with workers in a Fairtrade cotton factory in India.
The children were able to ask questions they had prepared themselves and discover what life and work is like in India and how Fairtrade helps to provide safety and security for them and their families. Workshops lead by Koolskools, Oxfam and The Fairtrade Foundation gave the children a deeper insight into Fairtrade and a chance to share what they already knew. Other schools including Trowbridge Primary School were impressed by how much Cockwood have already achieved and were keen to ‘magpie’ some of our ideas. Well done Cockwood!!
