This week Class 1 took part in a Samba drumming workshop with James Carr from Drum Devon. We were very fortunate to use the amazing space downstairs at Hope Church for this, where the children spent the day learning all about Samba rhythms and the history of the instruments used. This workshop was a fantastic way to consolidate and put into context Geography learning on South America, and also give children the opportunity to make progress in their musical skill and knowledge.
Throughout the day the children joined in complex call and response activities, replicating difficult ‘off- beat’ rhythms and creating syncopated patterns. They sang melodic phrases and discussed the significance of the lyrics and the phrases sung. They performed using a range of percussion instruments- djembe drums, snare drums and a range of other drums and handheld percussion. All children made fantastic progress in their music playing, and fed back that they loved the day.
This super workshop was gratefully funded by The Helen Foundation, who support creative projects within the Arts across Teignbridge. A huge thank you goes to them for supporting us in facilitating this fantastic day, and to James for providing a day full of activities and opportunities for fun and musical progress.
