PSHE

Intent

At Cockwood Primary School, PSHE is at the core of what we do and enables our children to  become independent, confident, healthy and responsible members of our school and within our wider community. We strive for them to grow into happy, active citizens of the future.

We are a Rights Respecting School, in collaboration with UNICEF, putting children’s rights and voices at the heart of what we do. We provide a safe and inspiring place to learn, where children’s thoughts, views and feelings are valued. Through participation in the Votes for School programme, pupils can explore and express their individuality,  and develop respect and a deeper understanding for the views and feelings of others.

Our whole school delivery of the PSHE curriculum is taught across the school from EYFS to Year 6 on a weekly basis and, as a school, we follow the 1Decision PSHE scheme, enriched with relevant and current themes and events.  This progressive programme provides opportunities for explore and discuss  age appropriate themes through relevant and meaningful content. This is supported through a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health. Mindfulness strategies are part of our whole school approach to staff and children’s wellbeing.

RSE forms a core element of our PSHE curriculum, and supports children in understanding and developing positive relationships and the skills to face challenges and resolve the inevitable conflicts that naturally arise within friendships and families.

To support children in keeping themselves safe, we draw on the expertise of outside agencies and visitors to enrich our teaching, including programmes such as NSPCC Stay Safe, Speak Out, Child Assault Prevention (CAP), Anti Bullying Week and Safer Internet Day.

With an ever changing society, we are able to provide our children with a strong  understanding of the diverse world around them and support them in playing a positive role in contributing  to the school and the wider community. Weaving through the heart of our PSHE teaching, is a commitment  to enhancing and promoting our core school values of perseverance, respect, reflection, creativity, ambition and happiness.

Implementation

Our whole curriculum is shaped by our school vision which aims to enable all children, regardless of  background, ability, additional needs, and to flourish to become the very best version of themselves they  can possibly be.

We teach the National Curriculum, supported by a clear skills and knowledge progression. This ensures  that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for  all children.

1 Decision PSHE directs our aim on developing the “whole child” through a spiral curriculum approach to  developing knowledge, skills and understanding in the areas of;

  • staying safe;
  • staying healthy;
  • relationships.

Impact

What will this look like? By the time children leave our school they will:

For all children to have a ready willingness and ability to try new things, push themselves and persevere. To  have a good understanding of how to stay safe, healthy and develop good relationships. To have an  appreciation of what it means to be a positive member of a diverse, multicultural society. To have a strong  self-awareness, interlinked with compassion of others.
