We were incredibly proud when one of our Year 6 boys recently represented the Teignbridge constituency at the COP26 Youth Parliament. Leo, who has a keen interest in politics and the environment, was chosen as he always engages well in our weekly debates and discussions based on topical issues. The virtual parliament was opened by the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson and The Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle. Children from across the UK debated and voted on key environmental issues, these results were then sent to all the world leaders attending the conference.
Class 1 had spent time discussing and thinking of practical solutions they could put forward to combat climate change. We submitted our thoughts and ideas to 10 Downing Street and, as a result, were invited to a live streaming event to hear the PM’s responses alongside the Chief Executive of the World Wildlife Fund.
This fitted in nicely with the theme for Parliament Week this year, ‘Get informed, take action, make an impact’.
Every child learnt about the UK parliamentary system and had a go at debating, hopefully they came home and shared this learning with you.
