Computing is embedded within everything we do at Cockwood, from accessing Maths and Literacy activities through digital platforms, to using new software to code and make algorithms. We believe that Computing is integral within our curriculum, and that every child should be exposed to new technologies and given opportunities to think computationally in order to prepare them for the modern world. Children receive an explicit Computing lesson weekly, where from Year 1 onwards they use Chromebooks, iPads and laptops to complete exciting computing activities. Lessons are progressive and cover all strands within Computing, giving children the opportunity to create a variety of digital items such as websites, videos, 3D models and robot algorithms whilst improving knowledge on computing systems, programming styles and how to stay safe online.
We pride ourselves on providing a variety of digital resources for all children to use daily. All children across the school have a Google Drive account which stays with them for their time at Cockwood School, allowing the children to store and retrieve their work both at home and school. Google Classroom is used for setting homework and updating families, and is key to ensuring computational thinking and learning can happen both at home and school. To support computational thinking, lessons start with a Bebras computational thinking activity, encouraging children to appreciate the processes and thinking required to understand physical computing processes.
We are always researching and investing in high quality hardware and software for the children to use, and strive to keep learning exciting through finding and funding new resources such as MicroBits and Raspberry Pi devices. To support this, we have employed the skills of a STEM ambassador who visits our group of ‘Digital Leaders’ weekly, coaching them on how to use new resources and platforms. The aim of this is to elevate their existing coding skills to a level where they are able to teach their peers and collaborate with children and teachers across the school. We offer a ‘Code Club’ for children in Key Stage 2 to attend after school, where children can extend their coding and programming abilities through personal projects with our Computing specialist. We also take part in wider coding events such as the global ‘code-a-long’, and coding workshops with Google, BareFoot and Microsoft, enabling all children to improve their coding skills through fun activities.
We understand how important Computing is in new communication technologies, and we encourage children to contribute to our school blog. This is managed by our Digital Leaders, who guide groups of children through the skills of uploading, editing and using the internet safely. Internet safety is an area of paramount importance within Computing, and one that we take very seriously. We ensure that our own skills and knowledge are up to date through frequent online safety training, and liaise closely with parents- offering them guidance and workshops to support them in monitoring their child’s online activity.
