We are very proud to announce that we designed one of the 200 flags on display in the Queen’s Jubilee Pageant. The children’s artwork was part of The River of Hope project organised by The Thames Festival Trust. Our flag design was based on our connection with the River Exe and the importance that the estuary and Dawlish Warren plays in the journey that migrating birds make from North Africa to the Artic. The river is transient and ever-changing; our flag shows birds in flight and fish swimming in different directions. Every child made a piece of art, which was photographed and digitally placed on the design. In the centre of the design there is an X – for the River Exe. The blue backdrop denotes the importance the river and water has in all our daily lives and how we must all protect our rivers and the nature that depends on it. We were incredibly fortunate to work with ex-parent and local artist, Jane Hirst, who supported us in putting together the final design. After the pageant, the flag will be on display at the Maritime Museum at Greenwich in London throughout September and October before returning to Cockwood in November.
The children each had a t-shirt as a keepsake of this amazing achievement and we hope this memory stays with them in years to come when they remember the part they had to play in the Queen’s parade.
