Class 3 Volunteering at Forest School

May 7, 2026Admin

What a wonderful week we’ve had at Cockwood Primary School! Our youngest learners have been showing us exactly what it means to be part of our school community and to look after the spaces we share.

Last week, as part of our We Are Ivy – We Are Cockwood volunteering week, Class 3 headed out to Forest School to lend a hand at the Methley Meadow site. After the winter months brought plenty of rain and wind, the outdoor space was looking a little tired and needed some love and attention. The children, supported brilliantly by our staff team, got stuck in and really made a difference.

One of the main tasks was refreshing the bark chippings around the fire pit. Over the winter, so much of it had been washed away or trampled into the mud, and our learners worked together to scoop piles of bark chippings into and out of the wheelbarrow – they absolutely loved it! Some of the children also helped with weeding around the site and trimming back bushes, getting their hands dirty and learning valuable lessons about caring for our outdoor environment.

What struck the staff team most about this experience was seeing our youngest children understand that their efforts genuinely matter. They weren’t just doing a task – they were doing their bit for the wider school community. The work they’ve done will benefit so many other children who also use the Methley Meadow site, making it a better, safer and more inviting learning environment for everyone.

This is what volunteering is really about: recognising that we all have a responsibility to look after the spaces and places we cherish. Class 3, you should feel incredibly proud of yourselves. Fabulous work!
