Last week, every child in our school volunteered in some capacity to help their community – a wonderful reminder of the values we hold dear at Cockwood Primary School.
Class 2 kicked off the week with a particularly special project. They headed to St Mary’s Church at Cofton to help clear and tidy the grounds. We have enjoyed a long association with the church over the years, and it was absolutely superb that we could give something back to their community and support the wardens who work so hard to look after the church and its beautiful grounds.
In just one hour, the children managed to fill four dumpy bags with weeds and twigs, preparing the area near the peace garden ready for mowing. But their efforts didn’t stop there. The pupils also helped to put up new bird boxes and carefully deposited small pieces of wool around the site to encourage birds to build their nests in and around the churchyard. It was a thoughtful touch that will benefit our local wildlife for months to come.
What struck staff most about the morning was the atmosphere. The sun shone brightly, and despite the physical work involved, the children were respectful, engaged, and genuinely helpful throughout. They understood the importance of what they were doing and took real pride in making a difference.
These are the moments that define our school community – when our pupils step beyond the classroom and actively contribute to the world around them. It teaches them so much more than any textbook could about kindness, responsibility, and the joy of helping others.
Well done to Class 2 for a superb start to the week. You should be very proud.
