Yesterday Class 2 had a fantastic day with Root Notes music, spending the day singing, playing and composing their very own Dartmoor themed songs.
The children sang traditional folk songs like ‘The Lark in the Morning’ (written in 1882) and ‘The Moor Round’, where the children sang in a successful round. They then had a chance to play a variety of instruments from violins, guitars and accordions, and practised different rhythm patterns.
The children then learned ‘The Hundred Pipers’ by William Andrew and ‘The Exmoor Ram’, and had a go at country dancing! Finally, the children made their own compositions to the Exmoor Ram’, creating their own lyrics about a very special Dartmoor hedgehog! They created their own instrumental accompaniment to this, and then performed to both Class 1 and 2.
The children had a fabulous day and made wonderful progress in their playing, composing and understanding of folk music. This tied in perfectly with their History learning on Anglo Saxons, Vikings and Dartmoor.
This wonderful day was made possible by The Helen Foundation, a local charity that provide funding for Arts workshops in the Teignbridge area. We are very grateful to them for their ongoing support in our artistic endeavours. You can see more of what they do here: https://www.thehelenfoundation.org.uk/
