Class 1 have been busy over the last few weeks composing two songs based on our local History. They are performing at Teignmouth School, alongside schools from across the trust this Wednesday.
Sally Stoneman, a local resident, gave us the inspiration for our pieces through her story-telling of Cockwood village in times gone by, when the harbour played a pivotal role in taking fruit and flowers by boat and train to be sold further afield.
The project has been based on community and identity and it has lead the children to explore the types of crops local farmers have sold over the years. The Cockwood area was famous for Devon violets, pinks, strawberries, plums, gooseberries and much more.
Cockles were harvested from the harbour for many years and the children have learnt about a famous local character called ‘Cockle Mary’.
We have created a selection of paintings linked to the local produce, these will be on display at the trust event in the foyer.
