After our recent visit to Bovington Tank Museum, the children were really interested in finding out more about the rations that people had to survive on during World War 2. We were kindly donated some apples from a local orchard and we discussed how we could make this produce ‘stretch’ to feed a family with limited rations. We found a recipe online, which we followed exactly. The children measured the ‘rations’ in ounces and worked in groups of 5 or 6 to make batches of apple and crumble. They used a range of skills from peeling and cutting the apples, measuring accurately, organising the packaging and teamwork. Each group had a list of roles within their group and they worked together to ensure they were all happy with the final product.
The children did evaluations of their final product and took their individual apple crumble home to enjoy with their family.
