Budding business tycoons are preparing to launch into their second year of profit. The brand of mouthwatering chutney will be available to purchase at the annual Cockwood School Farmers’ Market on Cockwood Village Green.
Pupils at the tiny Cockwood School have been involved in choosing the flavours, creating packaging, pricing and production of their Harbourside Chutney range of homemade condiments.
The young entrepreneurs, who range in age from 4 through to 11, have drawn up their own sustainable business plan. After taking part in exhaustive taste sessions and after listening to feedback they are pleased to launch a new and improved version of their bestselling chutney – Rhubarb with a hint of violet.
The Farmers’ Market which was held for the very first time last year was a huge success not only for the pupils and their Harbourside Chutney, but for the local businesses that helped support the day. This year the market will be held on Cockwood Village Green between 9am and 12noon on Friday June 30, when they will be joined by a wide range of local producers.
An Enterprise Project grant has helped to pay to produce and label their jars of chutney, print leaflets to be distributed around nearby villages and to advertise in local newsletters.
Cockwood head teacher Lorraine Curry said: “The school has really embraced enterprise and I am proud that we are continuing to develop our product, alongside supporting local business with the Farmers’ Market. The skills needed by the children to develop and refine this product, organise the market and meet with customers on the day are developing well. They foster key attributes, such as listening, team-working, independence and problem solving. The market is a wonderful event and we hope to share it with a variety of people, from residents to holiday makers. I am confident that the market on Friday June 30th will be even better than last year!”
