Careers Week gives us a fantastic opportunity to open doors for our pupils and help them think beyond the here and now. We invite parents, family, friends and members of our community into school to share their different jobs and talk about the skills needed to succeed in their particular fields. It’s a chance for children to learn about a much wider range of careers than they might otherwise encounter, and to understand the many different paths their futures could take.
This year, we have been extremely fortunate to welcome some truly inspiring visitors into our classrooms. A veterinary nurse shared her passion for animal care, a psychologist explained the fascinating world of mental health and human behaviour, a print designer for a fashion brand talked about creativity in the commercial world, a hairdresser demonstrated the artistry of their craft, a commercial ice-cream maker revealed the business side of a beloved treat, and an A & E doctor shared the reality of working in emergency medicine. The breadth of these professions really showcases the incredible diversity of career opportunities available to our pupils.
What struck us most was the genuine fascination on the children’s faces as they listened to each presentation. But it wasn’t just about listening – our visitors brought objects they use day to day, allowing the pupils to handle them, ask questions, and truly engage with what these different roles involve. That hands-on experience makes such a difference in helping children connect with the real world of work.
At Cockwood School, we believe that having an aspiration or goal is absolutely crucial for our pupils. It broadens their horizons, challenges early stereotypes, and most importantly, it connects what they learn in the classroom to real life possibilities. When children can see that their current education leads to future opportunities, it helps build early self-belief and academic motivation. They begin to understand that what they’re learning today has genuine purpose and relevance.
Careers Week is one of the ways we nurture this sense of ambition in our pupils. By showcasing the diversity of careers available and helping children see themselves in different futures, we’re investing in their aspirations and their belief in what they can achieve.
Thank you to all our community visitors who gave so generously of their time this week. Your contributions truly make a difference.
