Today we had the very special experience of releasing our own butterflies into the big wide world!
Class 3 were delivered a pot of tiny baby caterpillars from The Hungry Caterpillar a few weeks ago, and we have since been looking after them through their life cycle. We have watched them grow in size, eat food, shed their skin and build their chrysalides in their journey to becoming butterflies, and finally they all hatched from their pods and were able to be released into the wild.
We decided to release them on the field where there are lots of lovely flowers for them to fly around, and other butterfly friends for them to meet. One of our chrysalid pods wasn’t quite ready, so Mr Partridge put the pod in a big plant on the field, ready for when it hatches so it can join it’s friends.
We had a wonderful time watching the butterflies fly away, even though they loved their home so much that Mrs Morris had to give them a helping hand out. We had a close look at the cocoons that were left behind, and were surprised at how delicate and ‘crispy’ they were.
We have absolutely loved having the caterpillars/butterflies in our class, and they have become a real point of interest for both parents and children across the school. We hope they enjoy their new home, and will come to visit one day!
