Last Thursday, the children at Cockwood School were able to take part in a very special workshop day, where every child could learn how to play the African drum.
Allan Kerr from Shumba Arts was with us for the whole day, and delivered 3 unique workshops using his extensive collection of drums and percussion instruments. The children learnt about the names of different drums, their origins, different types of strokes and hits, as well as taking part in a variety of call and response activities and learning African songs and rhythms.
This workshop came at no cost to the children due to a fantastic grant from The Helen Foundation and support from our PFA. The Helen Foundation have worked with Cockwood for 10 years, providing the school with many creative opportunities and adventures during this time. Their hard work enabled this day to go ahead, and we are very grateful for their continued support in our creative ventures. A big thank you must go to our hard-working PFA, who were able to cover the rest of the cost.
The children absolutely loved this day of workshops, and arrived back to school full of spark and excitement. It was wonderful to see every child engaged and trying something new. Here are some pictures of our busy drumming day!
