Devon County Show

May 25, 2026Admin

What a wonderful week we’ve had at Cockwood Primary! We are delighted to share some exciting news about our Year 6 pupils and two Year 5 girls who had a special day out at the opening of the Devon County Show today.

This fantastic opportunity came about through our Monday afternoon Craft and Chat group, who entered a scarecrow into the Farmwise Scarecrow Competition. The theme this year was ‘people who help us’, and our group decided to create a scarecrow dressed as an RNLI lifeboat crew member – a perfect choice that celebrates the incredible work of our local heroes.

The scarecrow has truly been a whole-school effort. Mr Roper constructed the main frame, one family generously donated the straw, and Sally worked brilliantly with the children to craft the paper mâché head and helmet. Members of our wider school community brought in items to help dress our creation, and the Craft and Chat pupils put all the finishing touches together.

The four children who attend the club very kindly invited the rest of Year 6 to join them for this special day out. It’s a lovely way to mark the end of SATs and celebrate together as a year group. The pupils have had a super time exploring the main showground and even visiting their scarecrow – I’m sure it was a proud moment seeing their handiwork on display!

Thank you to everyone who helped bring our scarecrow to life, from those who contributed materials to those who supported the children’s creativity. A special thank you to Farmwise for generously providing our free tickets. This is what makes our school community so special.
