May Day Celebration

May 14, 2026Admin

What a wonderful way to bring our We Are Ivy – We Are Cockwood Week to a close! Last week, our entire school community came together to celebrate May Day on the village green, and it was truly a special afternoon that reminded us all of the importance of being at the heart of our community.

The children processed through the village in their finest, and were greeted by families, friends, and local residents who had come to join in the festivities. We were honoured to welcome the Deputy Lord Lieutenant, Katharine Davidson KC DL, along with the Dawlish Town Mayor and Deputy Mayor, who came to support the celebration. The town crier and his wife also attended, and it was particularly special to have our Head Girl, who is also the Dawlish Junior Town Crier, open proceedings and keep order throughout the afternoon.

I had the pleasure of welcoming everyone and reflecting on how wonderful it is to be at the heart of our community. Events like this bring us all together, creating moments to celebrate the end of winter and welcome in the summer season. There is something truly magical about gathering as one to mark these milestones.

The highlight of the day saw our May Queen crowned by the Mayor, supported by the May King and two attendants. Each class then entertained our visitors with county and Maypole dancing, alongside a variety of seasonal songs that filled the green with joy and laughter. We finished the afternoon in traditional style with a cream tea and ice-cream, giving everyone the chance to relax and enjoy one another’s company.

This has been such a memorable occasion, and we very much hope it will become an annual tradition for the village. Events like these strengthen the bonds between our school and the wider community, and we look forward to celebrating together again next year.
