During our We Are Ivy – We Are Cockwood week, we reached out to local community groups to ask how we might support them. St Mary’s Church at Cofton responded with a wonderfully creative challenge: they asked our pupils to design and build models of spaceships and rockets for their forthcoming flower festival in September.
The church very generously donated materials towards the project, and last week we dedicated a whole afternoon to creativity. It was brilliant to see how each child approached the brief in their own unique way, using a range of different materials and techniques to bring their designs to life. Some built towering structures with intricate details, while others took a more imaginative approach – but every single model reflected the thought and effort our pupils had invested.
What we loved most about this project was watching our children engage so enthusiastically with a real, purposeful task. They weren’t simply completing an activity for the sake of it; they were creating something that will genuinely be displayed and appreciated by the wider community. That sense of purpose makes all the difference to how children approach their learning.
We’re already looking forward to the flower festival in the autumn term and very much hope to take the children along to see their models displayed amongst the flowers at St Mary’s. It will be a wonderful opportunity for them to see the finished setting and to understand the impact of their contribution to the community.
