Art

We aim to deliver a dynamic and creative curriculum that inspires and challenges all children through a range of opportunities. We want to feed children’s creative development and nurture their imagination. Our pupils will see Art as a way to express themselves and communicate their thoughts and feelings.

We want pupils to flourish and explore, become risk-takers and experiment, innovation will be encouraged. Pupils will be able to reflect and evaluate their work, discuss their likes and dislikes and talk about different Art forms.

As a school, we will be less focussed on the outcome but praise and celebrate the creative journey. We want to create confident, independent artists who can articulate and value their own creative journeys. We will give pupils the vocabulary to support their work and have an expectation that talk will play a part in exploratory tasks. Children will learn the key age-appropriate skills, therefore, we believe it should be taught as an individual subject as well as incorporated into other curriculum
lessons.

During their time at Cockwood School, every child will take part in an Art workshop led by a professional artist. They will explore a wide range of skills and techniques through different mediums and experience working on large-scale pieces of Art and alongside individual pieces. Alongside our normal Art provision, children will create Art in their Forest School sessions. Connecting with patterns in nature and using sustainable materials underpins our values to make the children aware of their local surroundings and appreciate the nature on our doorstep. We build on prior knowledge and assess progression through the pupils’ sketch books, which pass on
to the next class with them as they move through the school.

Design and Technology

This subject inspires creativity and imagination and at Cockwood we aim to provide an inspiring curriculum, which will give pupils the opportunity to design and make products in a variety of contexts.

As part of an Enterprise Project, our school has developed a range of Harbourside products, such as chutney and chocolate, and these experiences act as a springboard for future learning within this curriculum area. The subject draws on disciplines such as maths, science, engineering, computing and art – from the initial design phase to the end product, which can be the organisation of a local Farmer’s Market and calculating profit margins.

We aim to empower pupils by providing them with real life opportunities, where they can develop key skills and knowledge, forge further links with the local community and beyond.

Pupils learn to take risks, to try and test new ideas and evaluate the success of their designs.

We provide opportunities for the pupils to discuss, question, explore and investigate, encouraging the use of rich vocabulary to communicate ideas in different ways.

In an ever increasing technological world, we aim to provide valuable experiences, where our pupils can be creative, knowledgeable and excited to learn more, both within their next educational setting and future employment.
